To join our cadet program, you may be between the ages 16 and 19. If you have a current NJEMT/NREMT, you will become a probationary EMT member as long as you are 18 years old. If you join prior to becoming an EMT, you will begin as a Probationary Driver Member, but you must be 19 years old or older.
You need to have a valid driver’s license beyond 19 years of age, in order to drive any EMS vehicle.
Probationary members are individuals who already have their NJEMT/NREMT or valid NJ driver’s license AND over 18 for EMTs or 19 for drivers. Probationary period is 3 to 6 months. During a member’s probationary period, they are responsible to provide patient care and/or driving activities to the level of their training. Members are required to complete orientation to the ambulances, equipment, and procedures of the Squad, and must demonstrate the ability to work well with others.
Cadets are members of the squad that are between the ages of 16 and 19 years old. Once a Cadet reaches their 20th birthday, they will automatically be transferred to a Probationary Class. Cadet members under the age of 18 will not have independent access to the building or bays; are not permitted in the building without an Active member present; are restricted to riding hours between 3:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on weekdays during school, and weekends and summer or vacation weeks based on written permission from a parent or legal guardian; and shall not be alone with a patient at any time. Cadet members are not permitted to drive any EMS vehicle.
Our minimum hour requirement is 22 hours of duty per month. All members are encouraged to ride 12-24 hours of weekend duty a month.
If you are able to commit, you will be assigned one duty night during the week (Monday-Friday). These shifts are reoccurring on a weekly basis.
Yes, both a doctors physical and criminal background check are mandatory.
Once you submit your application you will be contacted by the membership committee via email/phone call. The membership committee member will arrange an in-person interview. All new applicants join the squad as a “Probationary Member" or “Cadet Member”. Probationary or Cadet members are always supervised by full active members.
